A defamation case against two London lawyers who are suing the Michigan-based Park West Gallery over their purchase of a set of Salvador Dalí prints was dismissed last month, after a panel of three attorneys in Michigan assigned the case a value of $0.00. The panel, whose recommendations are non-binding, said the gallery should pay $347,900, around half the money they are seeking, to settle the couple’s suit against the gallery (The Art Newspaper, February 2009, p45).

The gallery withdrew its libel case against Sharon Day and her husband, Julian Howard, voluntarily. But according to Park West Gallery’s attorney Rodger Young of the firm Young & Susser, the gallery does not accept the panel’s other recommendations, so the case will proceed to trial later this year.

The story began in December 2007 when Day and Howard went on a cruise with Royal Caribbean. They purchased three Salvador Dalí prints from the artist’s “Divine Comedy” series, created in 1951, for over $97,000 from Park West Gallery which leases rooms on board Royal Caribbean cruise ships. After the cruise, Day and Howard purchased a complete set of Dalí’s “Divine Comedy” prints for over $483,000.

According to the gallery, each print in the series is signed by both the artist and the French publisher of the work. Day and Howard allege the gallery told them the acquisition was a sound investment which would escalate in value, a claim the gallery denies.

A few months later, Day and Howard decided to sell, but say they were told by a Sotheby’s expert that a complete signed set of “Divine Comedy” prints is worth between $60,000 and $80,000. At Day and Howard’s invitation, Dalí experts including Nicolas Descharnes, the son of the photographer Robert Descharnes, a friend and associate of the artist, examined the prints and concluded that although they are genuine, the artist’s signatures are fake.

Park West Gallery director Morris Shapiro rejected the findings of these experts and said three Dalí specialists, including Daniel David, current director of Les Heures Claires, the French publisher of the prints, determine that the signatures are real.

When asked why Park West Gallery had sold the prints for nearly $500,000—over six times the value apparently put on a complete signed set of “Divine Comedy” prints by Sotheby’s and over 40 times the highest price an unsigned set has made at auction—Jaye Quadrozzi of Young & Susser said: “The value of these prints has been discussed in detail. Morris Shapiro, in his deposition in this case, clearly discussed the fact that Park West itself has sold other fully signed sets for in excess of the price which Mr Howard and Ms Day paid for them.”

Meanwhile, the Michigan Court of Appeals also issued an order bringing Royal Caribbean Cruises back into Day and Howard’s case as co-defendants with Park West Gallery. They had previously been dismissed from the case because their attorney had argued that if anyone was at fault, it was Park West Gallery. But Donald Payton, the lawyer representing Day and Howard, said: “The cruise line provides a room for the auctions and makes upwards of 40% of all the sales.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises issued a statement saying: “Royal Caribbean denies any allegation or suggestion that it has done anything wrong. We take very seriously the issues that have recently been raised regarding some of Park West’s business practices.”

Shaun Gladwell, the Australian multimedia artist who represented his country at the 2009 Venice Biennale, and who has just returned from being an official war artist in Afghanistan, told The Art Newspaper that his experiences were “inspirational” and will inform his next body of work.

Gladwell was speaking on his return from Oruzgan province, where he lived and worked for three weeks alongside Australian soldiers in October 2009. He says he will spend the next six months in his Sydney studio, working to “digest” his experiences while in the field. “I’m cherishing [the trip], and starting to analyse what’s taken place at this particular time,” he said.

Before settling back into his studio to work with the raw photographs and moving images he shot in Afghanistan, Gladwell returned to Venice to pack up his Biennale work—a video series titled MADDESTMAXIMVS—Planet & Stars Sequence, 2009, set partly in the Australian outback.

Gladwell said it had been a long-held ambition to undertake a tour of duty with Australian fighting forces, stemming from the stories his father had told him about being a soldier in the Vietnam War.

“It was…like an entry point for me into thinking about this experience I have just had in Afghanistan,” he said

Several years ago, Gladwell contacted the Australian War Memorial (AWM) in Canberra and made it known he was keen to spend time in a conflict zone as part of the AWM’s official war artist scheme. About the time of the Venice Biennale opening last year, the AWM gave Gladwell the green light (The Art Newspaper, November 2009, p8). In return for the trip, a number of the resulting works will enter the permanent collection of the AWM.

Gladwell’s video pieces have often focused on wide-open landscapes. In one of his much-praised early works, Storm Sequence, 2000, he is shown in slow motion executing difficult manoeuvres on his skateboard on the Bondi Beach boardwalk, as angry clouds build in the background. In Apology to Roadkill, part of MADDESTMAXIMVS, Gladwell cradles the carcass of a kangaroo beside a highway cutting through the desert.

Yet despite his familiarity with inhospitable settings, Gladwell said the thing that shocked him most about Afghanistan was the landscape.

“It was just so vast and enormous and grand. At times it was inhospitable and it was also incredibly lush and green and dense in a matter of metres…I was impressed by the enormity of that space,” he said.

It surprised Gladwell that the troops on the ground had a thorough knowledge of the culture of the civilians with whom they interacted on a daily basis.

“They had a real connection to the local culture, which is really impressive. A lot of the guys had connected with the language and knew a lot of cultural practices and had quite an understanding of how that culture operates on a day to day level,” Gladwell said.

The artist said he had not been censored by the military. “I wasn’t interested in photographing sensitive material, in terms of the technology or weapons. My interest was really the experience of the soldier as a thinking and feeling subject. I’m interested in how bodies move through space and the capacity of bodies to perform in certain situations. Particularly how it relates to landscape. These are issues I’m always interested in. That informed the way I was dealing with that experience in Afghanistan. But I didn’t try and direct anything.”

At the tender age of 12 Natchez native Bob Stedman had already chosen what was to be his lifelong career. It was then that Stedman took the job as an artist’s apprentice under a German immigrant.

“He taught me more about art when I was 12, 13, 14 and 15 years old than I ever would have learned in college,” Stedman said.

Thanks to the tutelage of that German artist, Stedman learned a lot about art — including how to grind pigment and how to manufacture his own paintbrushes.

After high school Stedman moved to Memphis to become a pictorial painter. He hung off the sides of buildings to paint such things as 20-foot tall Coca-Cola cans …

The difference between a bloc worth revisiting and one that is forgotten about is the way the blog is written. Just imagine, would you prefer to read your university professors lecture notes or the latest novel by your favorite author

I will say you prefer to read the novel because it appeals more to your interest and because it is not as mind-numbing as the lecture notes by your professor. The most important point to remember is people like to read n light stuff most of the time. You see, when people log on to your blog, they are not only looking for information they are also looking for information they can obtain easily. They want it in a relaxed manner and entertaining if possible.

You might be thinking I can t write that way. Never could get the hang of it. I assure you, you can write that way.

Here are some key points that will transform your writing style.

Before you write one word of your post, write a compelling headline to grab their attention. For example, the title of the article you are reading right now Blog Content Is About You . This title must have attracted you to my blog. Why Because it is about You I also posted it in Article Directories which will attract even more readers, like you. The article in the Article Directories has my blog link in the Author Box which drives traffic to my blogs.

To attract more visitors as well as to keep your current visitors coming back for more, it is very important to add a human touch to your blog posts. This can be done by simply imagining you re talking about a certain topic with your personal friend. An extra bonus for your readers would be a great sense of humor, so try to add funny comments in your articles where they are suitable. Do avoid using vulgar language unless you don’t care about turning off a major audience of blog readers who will be offended. There are many blogs I will never visit again just for this reason.

Another important key point is to avoid addressing your reader as a plural unit, that is, as. Sometimes this is appropriate but most times it is to be avoided. You should not write as if you’re preparing a lecture. Instead, you should write as if you are having a conversation with one person because this will make your visitor think of you more as a personal friend rather than a professional writer or professor. I used this one-to-one technique as a Radio and Television News broadcaster. I imagined I was giving the news to just one friendly person who was interested in what I had to say and who trusted me. I wrote it and voiced it as if I were telling the stories only to them. In other words, I write like I talk.

The most important change in your writing style is to establish your own personality through your words. Because you are reading this article I assume you are a very curious person, just like I am. Based on the headline, you wanted to know what this article was all about. As you read, you likely are thinking Who is this writer . It follows that your visitors come to your blog to find out as much about you as the information you re offering them. I hope I am giving you some insight into who I am as a person and how I think because, in reality, I am using all the pointers in this article to demonstrate that they work.

You make your blog distinctive not the subject of your blog! Having your distinctive personality show through in your blog will make all the difference between your blog about gadgets and all the other blogs about gadgets out there. Get the idea Let me repeat for emphasis: You make your blog distinctive not the subject of your blog! This is a lot like creating your own brand name, where people immediately remember your blog’s name when they need to find out information about gadgets, or whatever you regularly write about, in the same way people immediately think of McDonald’s for burgers or Nike for sportswear.

Still think you can’t do it I challenge you to write just one blog post using the pointers I have given you and see what happens. Call it My Personal Opinion about And, let your personality out of prison, just once

Art collection can be a favourable hobby, past-time, or even investment. If you are new to this kind of activity, you can be overwhelmed with the vast number of approaches that you can choose from. So, to make things easier for you, here are some of the best tips you can get in regards to collecting art.

Buy Because Of What?

First off, you should understand that you should buy an artwork because you like it. Yes, it’s just that simple. Although it may be common sense, a lot of people still overlook this important idea. Some buy pieces because other people told them so, or because they saw others buying something similar. If you find a piece that moves you, and you think can enhance your life, then buy it! You do not have to wait for the approval of others to do so since the whole decision is yours.

What use is the beauty of an artwork that you bought, if personally, you don’t appreciate it or find it disgusting, even? Remember, in collecting art, there is nothing more self-gratifying than seeing a piece that communicates with you and moves your soul, most especially if it’s a piece that remains fresh and exciting for you even though you’ve seen it for hundreds of times. Go Gallery Hopping!

Another good thing to do when you’re starting a collection is to go gallery hopping. Try to go to as many art galleries that you can visit. Galleries’ staff guides can be helpful to you and can add up to your art education. Going to galleries can also be one good way of being exposed to different kinds of art, whether it is a gallery on paintings, sculptures or prints.

Galleries provide you with the real thing. Thus, you can examine more of the details of different works of art. Most of the time, galleries showcase some prestigious collections too. Viewing such, can yet be another way of seeing the collections of other people and generating ideas for your own collection. Get Connected

Most galleries also have a mailing list that regularly update you on their latest happenings and events. Being connected and up to date with what’s happening is another way to help you start with your collection. Sometimes, if there are openings or special events that these galleries hold, they can invite you to go.

Once you are invited, try your best to attend such events so that you can be more exposed to the industry. Additionally, events like these can bring you opportunity to know more people within the industry, and find more good deals around.

Go Local

If there are not much of art galleries in your place, then you can still go local! Try visiting and joining local art museums or non-profit art centers. You may be surprised to see how local talents in your area create masterpieces that seem priceless, yet you can buy at a cheap price. Since probably most of them are still budding artists, then you’ll probably spot some good deals around in which the beauty of the piece remains unaltered.

Also, the curators of such places sometimes provide lectures for those who are interested in collecting art. Some lectures may have a very cheap fee, while some can come for free, especially if there are big companies sponsoring the event.
