Extraordinary Art Collectors - Herb and Dorothy Vogel

Herbert and Dorothy Vogel are extraordinary collectors. The couple has amassed a world-class art collection of Minimal, Conceptual and post 1960s art over the past 45 years. The collection was carefully put together, as the couple had monetary and physical constraints. Mr. Vogel worked as a postal clerk and Mrs. Vogel as a librarian, yet they saved enough to acquire art on a regular basis. Their one bedroom apartment in Manhattan dictated the size of their collection of small artworks.

Their philosophy about buying art is simply, “We just bought what we liked.” Now, the collection has more than 4,000 works, many of which they have donated to major museums around the country. The National Gallery of Art in Washington was given 2,000 paintings, drawings and sculptures in 1992. Currently the couple is dividing the remaining 2,500 to institutions across the country in what is called the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: 50 Works for 50 States. This initiative is being carried out with help from the National Gallery, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Among the artists represented in the Vogel collection are Will Barnet, Robert Barry, Lynda Benglis, Dan Graham, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Edda Renouf, Pat Steir, Richard Tuttle and Robert Watts.

Museums that were lucky enough to receive part of the Vogel collection include: the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Harvard University Art Museums in Cambridge, the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin, and the Seattle Art Museum.

This blog features the Vogels, as well as other art collectors and here is a guide to collecting art.
